Earlier this month I photographed an all day and evening wine event for the Wines of Chile at the Royal Ontario Museum. The afternoon event was comprised of a tasting seminar and an industry tasting. In the evening was a consumer tasting, but it included more than just wine, there was great food and Chilean dancing.
To photograph the event I brought the Leica M9 with the Voigtlander 35mm f/1.2 Nokton and the 75mm f/2 Summicron lenses and a Fujifilm X-Pro 2 with the XF 16mm f/1.4, XF 56mm f/1.2, and Leica 135mm f/4 Elmarit (with an adapter) lenses. I used both the Leica and the Fuji during the afternoon events, but during the evening event only the X-Pro2 was used for its low light performance. The X-Pro2 also had the advantage of wifi and that has been extremely useful — and more than I expected it to be. With the wifi connection I can upload photos to Instagram and Twitter.
The event was in an indoor venue, but the afternoon tastings were lit with window light. Unfortunately, the evening event was illuminated with gel covered lights. Nonetheless the X-Pro2 did a pretty good job of computing an acceptable white balance.
Using both the Leica and the Fuji was a winning combination. For the most part, I used the OVF in the X-Pro2 and switching back and forth between the Leica and the Fuji and back again was pretty natural.
I photographed the above image with the Leica M9 and the 35mm Nokton at f/1.2. When it’s wide open, it can be a soft and the lens gives the picture a “dreamy” quality. Using the new Dehaze tool can very the strength of this “dreaminess.”
This was taken with the Fuji X-Pro2 and the 56mm f/1.2 wide open. The smudge to the left of the speaker is actually a poor job with the healing tool.

Above is another Leica M9 photo taken with the Nokton 35mm f/1.2 wide open. In the evening the walls would become blue, red and white from spotlights.
The image above was photographed with the X-Pro2 and XF 16mm f/1.4 at f/2 and 1/8th of a second. The prime lens nor does the Fuji body have image stabilization. The camera was rested against a street lamp pole.
The image above was photographed with the X-Pro2 and XF 16mm f/1.4 at f/3.6. This year was completely sold out.
The image above was photographed with the X-Pro2 and XF 16mm f/1.4 at f/2.8. I had a position to the side of the makeshift stage.
