A photographer friend of mine recently asked me to help him photograph a little league baseball game. It was conveniently close by and it was great opportunity photograph some sports. It’s interesting to see so many left handed batters, but then again it also lines up with the fact that we also have so many left handed golfers in Canada. I believe it has something to do with hockey? Anyhow, the Milton Mets played amazingly well. They won, but I don’t recall the score.
I shot entirely with the Nikon Z8 and the Nikkor Z 70-200mm f/2.8. I shot in manual mode, however, I had ISO set to Auto. I wanted to control both the shutter speed, which for most pictures was set to 1/1600s, and the aperture, which for the most part was kept wide open. There were a few challenges to making the photos:
- photographing through a chainlink fence;
- the sun was starting to set resulting in variable white balance;
- it was a windy day and although it was sunny, it was also partly cloudy and occasionally a cloud would cover the sun;
- there was the shadow of a light post which fell across the batter’s box; it’s evident in the photos.
But all in all, the challenges were generally overcome and/or mitigated.
