This is the story of my brother-in-law, Terry’s 50th birthday party.
It was celebrated at Inn on the Twenty in Jordan Village, Ontario. Terry’s wife (and my sister), Joy, apparently went to great lengths to conceal the surprise. Believing he was attending the birthday party of Ajay’s wife, Miranda, Terry was caught off guard when the yells of “Surprise!” were directed at him.
I photographed the birthday using two cameras: the Leica M with the Voightlander 35mm f/1.2 Nokton and the Fujifilm X-Pro2 with the XF 27mm f/2.8. The images around the table during supper were taken with the Leica. The photographs of the surprise itself and in the hotel room afterward were taken with the Fuji. No flash was used and except for the food, all of the images were converted to black-and-white because the interior lighting played havoc with the skin tones. The food pictures were left in color, but the color accuracy is off. Nonetheless, food photos lose even more appeal when shot in black-and-white in my opinion.
